2016 ORDINANDS RETREAT
THE REV'D CANON ART GOING, CANON FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
From August 8-10, thirty ordinands from the Diocese of Christ Our Hope gathered at the beautiful St. Francis Springs Prayer Center in Stoneville, NC, for their annual retreat. Every year those in the ordination process are expected to attend this time of prayer and worship, fellowship and learning.
After last year’s focus on a way of life and spiritual disciplines, this year’s retreat, the second in a two-year cycle, focused on “Christ-Shaped leadership” and spiritual authority.
Bishops Steve and Quigg were joined by Canons Art Going and David Hyman in biblical and pastoral teaching around these five themes:
Sanctification & personal spirituality
Stewardship & the spiritual household (oikos)
Of course, in addition to the teaching content, there was a lot of opportunity for sharing stories and for laughter, as well as for getting to know fellow ordinands from other parts of the diocese. Time for exploring the grounds, walking the labyrinth, one-on-one conversations with the bishops and canons about life and ministry, sharing a beer or glass of wine in the evening—all this contributed to the spirit of community over the three days. It’s not hard to imagine these early encounters as the beginnings of lifelong friendships among future colleagues.
Certainly a high point for many of the participants was the mid-retreat Eucharist, with an opportunity for anointing and prayer with the bishops. And, one dare not forget to mention the surprise debut of the “Christ Our Hope Choir.”
Ordinands, mark your calendars for next year’s retreat, back at St. Francis—August 14-16.
